Kathy and I have been re-living our childhoods this week thanks to Vh1's special on the "100 Greatest Songs of the 90's". So many good songs! So many memories! It's interesting how some songs can evoke such a specific a memory or emotion ("Only Want to Be With You" by Hootie and the Blowfish- waiting to get on the plane to go to Taiwan after sophomore year of high school). Or some songs seem to define a whole era/phase of life ("I Want it That Way" by Backstreet Boys- all the fun and drama of summer of 1999). It was kind of cool, watching this show brought up all sorts of fun little stories and quirks for both of us. Thank you, Vh1, for the blast from the past!
However... these lists are never perfect. Some groups that were notably missing from the list: Aerosmith, Crash Test Dummies, Gin Blossoms, No Doubt, Dave Matthew's Band, and Ace of Base... which I guess is OK. Perhaps some of the songs of those groups just missed the top 100. I could see that.
But the craziest is how Boyz II Men didn't have anything that cracked the top 100! How can you do a show on the 90's and not even have anything about Boyz II Men? No "End of the Road"?? I guess this is what happens when everything is left up to the popular vote via the Vh1 website. Did somehow all the voters not go to their junior high graduations?? Shoot man.
I guess it would be so crazy if all the other 100 songs were amazingly catchy, culture-defining hits. But "Peaches" by Presidents of the U.S.A. makes the list at #64?? I mean, that was a fun song, but "greater" than Boyz II Men in the 90's? Come on now, what's up with that?
What do you guys think? What songs would you think have to be on this list?
Wow... it sure has been a while since I've blogged. I do have some deeper thoughts swimming around. But... for now, my first blog "chain" post. Funny... at first I didn't want to do it, which made my wife take me off her list... which made me pout... which made her put me back on. So now I'd better do it. Here goes. My first cheesy blog list. Yipee...
Four places I have lived: 1. My mommy's belly 2. Kitchener, Ontario, Canada 3. Lexington, MA. Yes... I am a tried and true mass-hole. 4. Palo Alto, CA
Four TV shows I like to watch: 1. Heroes 2. 24 (only with my wife) 3. Everybody Loves Raymond- cuz some people say I look and act like him 4. Good Eats. Alton Brown is a total food nerd. He's awesome.
Four places I have been on vacation: 1. Hawaii: Kauai & Maui 2. Alaska + Vancouver 3. Bar Harbor, Maine 4. the Jersey shore
Four favorite foods: 1. Italian... especially anything with tomato sauce 2. meaty tomato sauce 3. tomato sauce with sausage 4. anything my wife makes
Four places where I would rather be right now: 1. Hawaii 2. California 3. someplace sunny 4. someplace warm
Four people whom I want to respond to this: 1. chemistrydolphin 2. lovelyrita_s 3. bostonwei 4. kangaroo802
Alright... I should get back to work... =P More thoughts some other time...
Just wanted to share this cool link: Sojouners' interview with Moby. I never knew Moby was a Christian! I like the way he articulates his faith journey...
Look to this site for future parts of the interview: God's Politics blog. In fact, I would recommend looking to the site regularly (ignore the weird ads) for good thoughts and reflections from Jim Wallis and others about being a culturally and politically engaged Christian.
Other thoughts: It's kind of weird. For 27 years (except for one summer in Mexico City), I slept happily in a bed by myself. But in just 2.5 months, I've gotten very used to sharing a bed. While my wife is out of town this weekend, I'm finding it quite difficult to sleep in a bed by myself. All last night, everytime I rolled over I would wake up, expecting to bump into something. Perhaps I'll strategically place some pillows next to me tonight. Score.
